Antwerp is not only the diamond city and chocolate paradise, but a very homely city with lots of churches and museums, a large pedestrian shopping centre and ideal to explore the rest of Flanders (Ghent, Bruges, Hasselt,...). Train services are excellent departing from Antwerp Central Station. Breda, Hulst and Roosendaal are three towns in the Netherlands close by. If you take public transport, it pays to buy a day-pass with the national transportation company DeLijn, or a 10-journey ticket (costing €8 when you buy it at a newsagent, in a supermarket or any shop that sells them), the latter being valid on any tram or bus in any city in the whole of Flanders. Once you get on the bus/tram, you can change as many trams and buses as you like but you should board the last tram/bus within 60 minutes of your first journey. If you intend to travel inside Belgium by train it pays to buy a rail-pass (10 journeys for €70, second class) with which you can travel from any station to any station within Belgium using Antwerp as your starting point. |
